The Birdman of Mauritius
My love of nature and birds in particular, took root at an early age. One morning in 1949, before school, I came across an assembly of children excitedly crowded around a carton, containing a delicate Zebra Dove captured in the streets of Mauritius. I pooled my resources together with my brother to purchase freedom for the bird. Sadly, it expired during the day. Filled with remorse, I from this day onward vowed never again to fail bird life, but to strive to acquire the knowledge required to preserve birds.
This was at a turning point in my life. I invested most of my time and money to raise birds in aviaries, studying and analysing their subtle emotions. I would explore far beyond Mauritius, but I would always retain a special affection for my homeland and its surrounding ocean.

Releasing Soon : Birds of the Indian Ocean
Mauritian born photographer and ornithologist Narainsamy Ramen’s 4th book on Indian Ocean avifauna is a ground-breaking achievement. For the first time, all the endemic birds of the Indian Ocean Islands, alongside resident subspecies, waterbirds, seabirds, migrant shorebirds, migrant Birds of prey, migrant and exotics…etc., have been photographed in their diverse natural habitats and presented in a two-volume guide.
From the semi-arid baobab groves of Socotra to the lush tropical rain forests of Sri Lanka, Narainsamy, over the course of several years, visited each of the Indian Ocean’s remote archipelagos, and in over 1000 beautifully composed photographs, painstakingly captured the essence of these elusive birds in exuberant displays of natural behaviour. I would like to take this opportunity to show my appreciation to Adrian Skerrett whose detailed knowledge has been a great contribution to the book. Writing a book has everything to do with one’s involvement with the subject.
Over the years, Ray has published several books. A great level of care has been taken to illustrate and catalogue the birds of the different regions.

About Ray
Narainsamy Ramen I was born on 12th May 1941 in Rose-Hill, Mauritius, fourth child of Mr Carpaya and Mrs Selon Ramen. I became known as ‘Baby’ Ramen, or later to my friends, simply as ‘Ray’
My passion and determination to gather the material for photographically illustrated books has been relentless. Likewise, my immense patience, the secret of every great nature photographer. Watch and listen with finger on the trigger, ready to capture that special moment when the bird reveals its personality, its life and relationship with its environment.
Us, humans are only one of the species which co-habit this planet. It is hubris to think we are the most important creatures on earth.
